Newcastle United salvage draw against Bournemouth in dramatic finish

Newcastle United manager Matthias Jaissle reversed a late substitution as his side managed to secure a point in a challenging encounter against AFC Bournemouth.

The German coach avoided what could have been a setback in his third match at the helm, as he stopped his coaching staff from bringing on Bazoumana Toure just prior to the free-kick that resulted in an equaliser from Jacob Ramsey.

Jaissle called out "wait" to his bench while Amar Dedic delivered a free-kick, leading to Newcastle's goal before he opted to substitute defender Tino Livramento for Lewis Hall instead.

This draw keeps Newcastle unbeaten, although they were perhaps fortunate to escape with a point after Bournemouth created 17 chances.

After the break, United managed to shore up their defence following a dominant first half from the Cherries, who had established a 2-0 lead.

At times, Newcastle struggled to cope with Bournemouth in the first half, frequently giving away possession and failing to create opportunities, which led to 13 goal attempts from the visitors.

Indeed, the match could have been settled before the half-hour mark had Bournemouth been more clinical.

However, Newcastle mounted a comeback thanks to a stunning goal from Harvey Barnes and Ramsey's late intervention.

On a day when referee Rob Jones faced criticism from the crowd for his unclear decisions, Jaissle received a booking for stepping outside his technical area.

The match began at a frantic pace, with Bournemouth winning a dangerous free-kick right on the edge of the area, but Marcus Tavernier's effort went straight into the body of Lukas Hornicek.

Tavernier did not miss in the ninth minute, scoring from close range at the Gallowgate End.

There was a hint of controversy surrounding the goal, as referee Rob Jones did not award a foul after Anthony Elanga was brought down, allowing the Cherries to break forward.

Rayan advanced down the right and delivered a low cross into the box, which Sven Botman could only partially clear.

This indecision allowed Adam Smith to find Alex Scott, whose first-time cross reached Tavernier, who slotted it home from close range.

Bournemouth had an opportunity to extend their lead four minutes later, but Evanilson's shot went over the bar.

As the first half progressed, Bournemouth maintained their lead, and Newcastle's couple of corners failed to trouble Dorde Petrovic at the Leazes End.

Hornicek again came to Newcastle's aid on 26 minutes as he collected Tavernier's weak effort with ease.

Things took a turn for the worse for Newcastle as Bournemouth surged into a 2-0 lead on 35 minutes, when a powerful shot from Justin Kluivert struck the post.

Alex Scott followed up with a cross that deflected off Malick Thiaw and into the bottom corner.

However, just 42 seconds later, Newcastle responded as Harvey Barnes broke free down the left and curled an effort over Petrovic into the right-hand corner, making it 2-1.

Lewis Hall's pass found the £38m signing, who took four touches before delivering a stunning finish.

The score remained the same as they headed into the break, but six minutes into the second half, Elanga's cross found Joe Willock, whose header went just wide.

Jaissle made changes after the hour mark, introducing his £51m signing Matias Fernandez-Pardo and Jacob Ramsey in an attempt to inject fresh energy into the team as Willock and Miley made way.

Fernandez-Pardo's debut was overshadowed by Kluivert, who received a booking for his actions.

With the crowd growing frustrated with Jones' inability to penalise fouls against Newcastle while quickly punishing them the other way, Jaissle made his feelings known and received a yellow card for stepping out of the technical area too often.

The Magpies brought on Sean Steur and Jacob Murphy for Elanga and Gonzalez with 13 minutes remaining.

Newcastle equalised in the 88th minute after Murphy was fouled by Adrien Truffert.

At that moment, a substitution had been prepared with Toure set to come on, but Jaissle decided against it.

Seconds later, Dedic sent a high ball into the box, and after a scramble, super sub Ramsey found the net to level the score at 2-2.

Toure was instructed to sit down, and Jaissle instead brought on Tino Livramento for the final six minutes of added time.

Neither side could find a winner, and both had to settle for a point.

Referee Jones and his officials were met with jeers as they left the pitch, with Newcastle fans expressing their frustration.
