German fan groups demand abolition of VAR in Bundesliga and DFB Pokal

Various supporter groups in Germany, including those from Bayern Munich, are advocating for the removal of VAR from both the Bundesliga and the DFB Pokal.

As reported by Abendzeitung, fan scenes from multiple clubs across the country have released a statement which states:

"In the first round of the DFB Pokal now getting underway, we'll see football as it should be played: without VAR, and therefore authentic, immediate and full of emotion.

“We want to return to this state permanently and are therefore calling for the abolition of the Video Assistant Referee in German football.”

Bayern's Südkurve shared the statement via email, which also included some context regarding the initiative:

“There are currently rumours that some club executives are also becoming increasingly unhappy with it [VAR].

"They would even be prepared to submit a motion to the DFB to abolish the video review altogether, or at least significantly restrict its use.”

The fan groups aim to provide the officials involved with “backing,” as noted by the Südkurve in its statement.

Recently, FC Augsburg's managing director Michael Ströll publicly expressed opposition to VAR.
