Celtic aim for Champions League qualification with strong lead

Celtic are close to securing Champions League qualification, holding a 3-0 advantage ahead of Tuesday night’s match in Austria. The officiating team for the encounter has been confirmed, featuring one of UEFA’s most seasoned referees.

Celtic's solid lead is attributed to goals from Benjamin Nygren and Camilo Duran during Wednesday's match in Glasgow. Each goal was significant, but the team understands that their task is not yet finished.

If they can avoid conceding an early goal, the chances of the Hoops advancing to the league phase of the competition will increase. The Hoops have demonstrated their attacking prowess against LASK, but the Austrian champions will present their own challenges.

The officiating team has been disclosed, with Polish referee Szymon Marciniak appointed to oversee the match. He is well-known for officiating the 2022 World Cup final between Argentina and France.

Marciniak averages 4.08 yellow cards per game and 0.10 red cards.

Although Marciniak has not previously officiated a Celtic match, he served as one of the additional assistant referees during the 1-1 draw against Stade Rennes in the 2011 Europa League group stage.

There is a Scottish connection, as the 45-year-old officiated Scotland’s World Cup qualifying match against Denmark last November, a notable occasion when the Tartan Army qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 1998.

For the Champions League clash on Tuesday, Marciniak will be assisted by fellow Polish officials Tomasz Listkiewicz and Adam Kupsik. The VAR duties will be managed by Pol van Boekel from the Netherlands, with support from Pawel Malec.

Fans will likely be more focused on Celtic’s performance than on the officials.
